Very interesting multidisciplinary work!

''I am an artist / designer / musician based in Edinburgh, Scotland. I work in the fields of visual art, graphic design, performance, installation, sound and music. I try to view all my creative output on the same level and a great deal of my work concerns the boundaries between the fine arts, design and music. My work often combines traditional methods with new digital technologies and I divide my time between solo and collaborative projects.

I am a member of the artist collective / band FOUND and run a small independent record label called Surface Pressure Records.''

Superposition of modificatons of a place by the cartography, I like the idea.

"Cartography has long played a central role in my work, featuring prominently in the cracked parking lot drawings and sculptures and the ocean floor sculptures. These new sculptures transform the two dimensional mapped image into multi-layered sculptures of the communication, transportation and river systems that comprise the current city. The “map” has been animated and transformed, the natural abstraction of the map extended into a work of art that is at once abstract and tangibly real in the same moment." Gallery of computation by Jared Tarbell

Happy place

Happy place

Happy Place
renders the resulting configuration of a system of friendly nodes. They are connected at random with preferences to nodes closer. Connections between nodes are considered friendships.

Orbitals, radial

The Orbitals is a collection of particles operating on one simple rule: choose another particle in the system and orbit it with a fixed radius at a constant velocity. This is variation B (see Orbitals Variation A). In this variation, a single root particle is instantiated in the center of the stage. All other particles introduced to the system fall into orbit at some level.

Substrate

Lines likes crystals grow on a computational substrate. A simple perpendicular growth rule creates intricate city-like structures.

Sand dollar
Sand dollar

The Sand Dollar is an iteratively constructed radial form using the Sand Stroke painting technique. A very high level of detail is achieved with backpainting each Sand Dollar several times. The radial form is constructed with a sweeping tree-like structure that oscillates as it moves clockwise around the origin. Attached to the tree in random locations are the Sand Stroke elements.

Royksopp : Remind me

" Remind Me/ So Easy was the first single from the Norwegian duo Röyksopp's debut album Melody A.M. The song features a visually stunning animated video, directed by the French motion graphics studio H5. It features a day in the life of a woman working in the London's Square Mile solely through infographics; this includes labelled close-ups of everyday objects, product lifecycles, schematic diagrams, charts, and is generally illustrated in a simple isometric visual style."

Andes House by Chetwood

Andes House, Santiago, Chili, Chetwood

"This house’s location, a hilltop site nestled in the Andes foothills, sounds idyllic, but the surrounding environment is often harsh. Temperatures reach desert-like highs during daytime hours and then plunge below freezing at night. Due to the site’s remoteness, moreover, the house must be entirely self-sufficient and supply its own water and electricity. The house’s distinctive form provides solutions to these problems.

The form and function of Andes House mimics an alpine flower reacting to its habitat and climate, opening each day to soak up the sun’s energy and then closing as dusk falls to protect its fragile innards from the cold of night. In daytime, the house’s roof, an array of huge petals, opens upward and out to provide stunning views over the rainforest while shading the entire property and allowing ventilation. At night, the petals close, enveloping the extensively glazed façade, insulating the house and transforming it into a sanctuary."

Herwing Weiser, Death before disco, installation 2005-2006

"Herwig Weiser built a machine which confronts us with its technical elements in a particularly clear and alienating way. 'Death Before Disko' uses an online data stream from space observation and translates it into simple yet spectacular sound and light events. With the proliferation of digital technologies, users have become more and more distant from the physical hardware of their laptop or hi-fi units. 'Death Before Disko' aims to return to the foundations of the hardware, and shows how our relationship towards technology is more often emotional than rational. "

Avanto Architects

Avanto Architects, Lookout Tower, 2002

Situated on a cliff-top site eighteen metres above sea level, with spectacular views of the sea and the city of Helsinki, the ten-metre tower is a delicately transparent landmark for Korkeasaari Island. The free form is inspired by its natural setting: it follows the existing low stone wall and skirts around a small birch grove.
The load bearing gridshell structure consists of 72 gluelam battens, with timber sections of 60mmx60mm bent and twisted on site from seven preformed types. Over 600 bolted joints hold the shell structure together. The tower was a HUT Wood Studio project in 2000-2002 and Hara's graduation project.

Avanto Architects, Kurttila, 2007

The city of Espoo asked Avanto Architects together with a landscape architect and a geotechnical engineer to study how more housing area could be integrated in a detailed plan for Kurttila.

Wing Setup

Belle idée!
Beautiful idea!

Designed by Ines Vlahović and Mladen Orešić of Croatia, the original impetus for Wing was to provide energy in remote locations (camping, at the beach, in remote rural areas, etc), but the success of the prototype makes it easy to use Wing as a secondary source of electricity in the home as well. Wing is suitable as a secondary power source in any settled situation, and earned one of the highly-coveted INDEX Awards of 2007: Design to Improve Life.

Green Oasis

Meesters & Marije van der Park, Green Oasis

Design studio Meesters & Van der Park seeks inspiration from nature and technique resulting in Green Oasis, a summer house in the shape of an excavator, covered with climbing plants.’The city changes through a continuous process of demolition and rebuilding. Nature comes second almost every time.’

With Green Oasis, Meesters & Van der Park re-introduces nature to the city in a functional way. For the design, the agency was inspired by technique as well as nature: the shape of the excavator embodies technique, while the growing climbing plants represent the force ofnature. The result is a summer house in the shape of a life-sized excavator, covered with green climbing plants. It is literally a green oasis for those much needed moments of peace and quiet in an urban public environment. The summer house offers seating to four people. The object is entirely made of laser cutted steel and produced by Phoenix Metaalwarenfabriek.

Conrad Shawcross

Conrad Shawcross, Harmonic tower, 2005

Each of the five oak machines in Loop System Quintet – connected by a single drive-shaft - draws a different ‘knot’ of light in space, predetermined by the ratio of the cogs that drive it. These ratios are directly related to formal theories of musical harmony (Harmonics). The resulting light patterns, perceived by the viewer only as the machines rotate, can therefore be regarded as visual transcriptions of musical chords. Each machine has no further purpose. The artist has said:

“It is all folly, and with no use or product, as a machine, it is tragic”.

The circles of energy produced by the lights also relate to string theory, a complex scientific theory stating that matter is comprised of vibrating ‘strings’ of energy rather than single, isolated particles.

Conrad Shawcross, Space Trumpet, 2005

Space Trumpet was inspired by a trip the artist made to Holmdel, New Jersey, to find the Bell communications antenna. In 1965, this primitive radio telescope had inadvertently picked up microwaves: these were the residue of radiation created by the birth of the universe billions of years earlier. This startling discovery validated the ‘big bang’ theory. The exhibition takes its title from the rival ‘steady-states hypothesis’ that this breakthrough undermined.

Conrad Shawcross, Harmonic tower, 2005

Harmonic Tower is a massive version of a Harmonograph. This popular Victorian device created small, mathematically patterned drawings (similar to those made by a modern spirograph) by means of pendulums.

In Conrad's version, there is an added dimension of time, as rather than remaining still, the paper - located at the top of the tower - is drawn through the machine as the pendulums swing. The large-scale drawings produced by his device offer a visual interpretation of musical harmony, using a combination of rhythms and mathematical methods in their creation.

Although the device is displayed in its stationary state, the drawings around the walls were created here, by the artist, once the Harmonic Tower had been installed.
