Leonardo da Vinci's Map of Imola (1502)

Town plan of Imola c. 1502, Pencil, chalk, pen and wash on paper, 440 x 602 mm, Museo Vinciano

Une carte magnifique...
A splendid map...

"It was during Leonardo's time in Florence (1501—1507) that the magnificent maps — reckoned to be amongst the first achievements of modern cartography - were created. There is disagreement with regard to the town plan of Imola as to whether Leonardo produced the map himself or simply made slight alterations to an older map dating from 1473. A survey map (Royal Library, Windsor) of his survives which suggests that Leonardo's town plan was developed by him independently. He may, though, have used the older plan in order to compare his own measurements with it."

Superposition de modificatons d'un lieu par la cartographie, j'aime l'idée.
Superposition of modificatons of a place by the cartography, I like the idea.

"Cartography has long played a central role in my work, featuring prominently in the cracked parking lot drawings and sculptures and the ocean floor sculptures. These new sculptures transform the two dimensional mapped image into multi-layered sculptures of the communication, transportation and river systems that comprise the current city. The “map” has been animated and transformed, the natural abstraction of the map extended into a work of art that is at once abstract and tangibly real in the same moment." An explanation of the magnetic atlas

Voici une carte magnifique.
Here a splendid map.

"The book:
'An explanation of the magnetic atlas, or variation chart, hereunto annexed : projected on a plan entirely new, by which the magnetic variation on any part of the globe may be precisely determined, for any time, past, present, or future : and the variation and latitude being accurately known, the longitude is of consequence truly determined / by John Churchman, late land surveyor for the district of the counties of Delaware and Chester, and for part of Lancaster and Berks, Pennsylvania.' 1790.
This half-globe gore map is, I recall, the only illustration in the book. Clicking on the above image
ought to take you direct to the Library of Congress page in question (or here, if needed). An enormous version is available."

Ledia Carroll - Mission Lake

Voici un très beau projet réalisé par Ledia Carroll.
Here a very beautiful project carried out by Ledia Carroll.

''On October 22, 2006, Ledia Carroll will use a field line chalker to recreate the full perimeter of Lago Dolores, a former freshwater lake that stretched from what is now South Van Ness to Guerrero and 15th to 20th Streets. Drawing the line in reference to maps from the 1800s, Carroll’s chalkline allows the still visible ancient depression of the lake to become apparent to the eye. In conjunction with the re-created lake shoreline, Ledia Carroll presents a “lakeside” barbeque and perimeter “alleycat” bike race.''
